Plus-Sized & Fit

Good Morning!

There’s a nasty rumor out there that if you’re plus size then you’re automatically not healthy- NOT TRUE! Though one may not see a lot of us plus size ladies in the gym doesn’t mean we aren’t taking steps to be healthier and happier in our curves. I’m a firm believer that in order to truly love the skin you’re in you have to take care of YOU inside and out… I asked bootcamp extraordinaire Ms. Aja Davis to take the reins today , enjoy!

Plus-Sized and Fit
by Aja Davis
You know you should do it. Maybe even twice a day. I mean it ma
kes you feel so good, works up a good sweat and leaves you high for the rest of the day (or night). And the more you do it, the more you want to do it. It's even good for your skin. Some even do it with their sock on. Get you mind out of the gutter! I'm talking about working out! Yes, sex may be a way to work up a sweat but it is no substitute for the gym or a great exercise class. Many in the plus community, however, simply do not get enough exercise. There are many reasons for this but the main one I come across with many of my clients is fear. Fear of being ostracized or not fitting in at your gym or aerobics class. Repeatedly, I hear the same complaint, 'exercise just isn't for me.' And it's completely understandable to feel this way. The super thin and fit twenty-somethings that fill cardio rooms and exercise classes may seem to scream “If you're plus -sized, this is not for you!” And when you do actually make it into the gym, the fashionistas' icy stares pierce into you as if to say, “What are you doing here?” It is incredibly ironic. You want to get in shape, are aware of the need to lead a healthier lifestyle, and yet are made to fear the very avenues that lead to that end. So instead, you perfect your strut, surround yourself with other's who claim indifference and continue on with your life, perhaps sinking further and further into your own denial about your health and well-being.

Well, I'm hear to tell you that the denial has to stop. Stop lying to yourself! You may love your curves, but huffing and puffing up the subway stairs is not fun. Neither is being short on energy to enjoy your life, go out dancing, keep up with your girlfriends at the shopping mall, go bike riding, or whatever else tickles your fancy. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that everyone should want or needs to be a sized 2. In fact, many of my strongest clients are plus-sized and have no desire to be Jennifer Aniston.

You can have your curves and your health and I'll show you a few ways to do just that. Being afraid, unmotivated, or uninterested in exercise and leading a healthy lifestyle is not an option for those blessed with voluptuous curves. The added weight puts you at a higher risk of heart attack, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol, joint pain and arthritis just to name a few. Being on a regular exercise program can help to mitigate and even prevent all those things, not to mention make your sex life better. And wouldn't it feel great to buy that dress even just one size smaller?

Here are some ways I encourage my plus-sized clientele to start being active and commit to a healthy lifestyle.

1. Find a buddy. Starting an exercise or nutrition program is much easier and much more fun when you have someone to do it with. Plus, it's easier to hold each other accountable. If none of your friends are interested, branch out. Try asking coworkers, maybe post a sign at your local grocery store or church. If you're on a neighborhood listserv, try posting for a workout buddy there.

2. Join my bootcamp. Shameless, I know, but seriously. I've created a bootcamp geared towards the needs of the plus community. People are friendly here and are incredible motivators for each other. Plus, you'll see serious results and when you graduate the program I'll buy you a pair of skinny jeans or a convertible dress by Monif C. Check it out at www.newbodybootcampnyc.com
3. Do something that you enjoy. If exercise is a chore, you feel embarrassed or dread going, you won't stick with it in the long run. The goal should be to find something that you can sustain for more than a week or two. Ideally, you want something you can enjoy for months or years to come.

4. Drink more water. This is a tip I always give no matter what. People simply do no drink enough. And water affects everything from mood, to weight, to appetite to digestion. To know how much water you should be drinking take your weight and divide it by 2. That will give you the number in ounces of how much water you should drink on a daily basis. Ex. If you weigh 200lbs/2 = 100oz of water A DAY!

5. Find a nutrition plan that works for you. The most important part, even more important that exercise is what you put in your body. Think about it like this: our cells are literally made up from the food we eat. That old saying you are what you eat is much truer than you may realize. If you eat a lot of junk, your cells build themselves off of junk and you start to look and feel much like the junk your eating. If you eat more fresh vegetables and unprocessed foods, you look and feel much lighter and happier because your cells are building themselves from things that truly nourish the body. Whether it's counting calories, weighing food, or a more holistic approach find what works for you and stick with it.

Being Plus-sized does not mean you can't or shouldn't exercise and think about your health. You just have to find the right program for you. With a little persistence and effort you will soon be on your way to a healthier, more active lifestyle.

What J' is Jonesin' For: The Pink Edition

Good Morning!

By now I'm sure you've seen pink all over the place and know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This edition of "Jonesin'" is dedicated to all things pink in which proceeds go to support Breast Cancer research. It's so much more about the color pink, it's about finding a cure for a disease that affects more than 190,000 women a year- the awareness doesn't stop on October 31st. Even though the incidence of breast cancer is lower in African-American women, the death rate is one of the highest across the board.Regardless of ethnicity, breast cancer affects us all and it's vital that we do what we can to help find a cure and take the steps needed to check ourselves.

So whether it's a scarf, t-shirt, item of jewelry or even a donation to a pertinent charity - make a difference.

Torrid has a collection of items in which the proceeds are donated to breast cancer research & they are also giving 10% off your entire purchase if you use the code "powerofpink"

Balmshell "1 in 8" LipGloss $22, Sephora (my favorite shade is "Who's Your Caddy?")

Reader Submitted: Like a pink snuggie.... but considering that it's bound to get cold soon I can get with this.Pink n.a.p Comfy Ultra-Plush Blanket with Sleeves $39.95, Brookstone

I recently purchased a pair of sterling silver cancer ribbon earrings for a friend of mine who has just been diagnosed with Breast Cancer- they were from Elisa Ilana ($35)- she loved them!

For more information on breast cancer & how you can help visit the Susan G. Komen foundation site here.

Think Before You Pink!
A word of advice, make sure that if you buy "pin"k that the money is actually going towards research- (sorry it's the little social activist in me) check out Breast Cancer Action for more information.

What are you jonesin' for this month?

Don't Wait for the Weight

Good Morning!

I know this blog discusses mainly fashion but I would be remiss to ignore that the mindset of the person wearing the clothes are just as important. Put it like this,a beautiful gown doesn't look as good if the person wearing it doesn't believe that she looks stunning in it-there's just something missing. I acknowledge that though there are many confident plus side ladies out there there are just as many who aren't comfortable with their size and are waiting to lose weight in order to live life...here's a sample of the things that have been shared....

  • "I know I'm pretty but I don't dress up and flirt because I'm waiting to lose weight to do that."
  • "I don't dance when I go out with my friends but I'm sure when I lose weight I will."
  • "I havn't taken a picture in 2 years because I hate the way I look so when I finally lose 40 lbs I'll proudly smile..."
  • "I love to window shop because I get to make a mental list of all the clothes I'm going to get once I lose weight."
  • " I refuse to go to my class reunion until I lose weight."
I was lucky enough to get author Monica Jones to guest blog and give her take on this issue, let's proceed shall we?

Don't Wait for the Weight

This morning I almost got discouraged when my weight had increased by 5 pounds from yesterday's reading, but then I had to catch myself and remember how the scale can be a true set up. Several factors contribute to the reasons why our weight on the scale may fluctuate from day to day and sometimes throughout the day. From my research I have found that our true weight is the weight that we see first thing in the morning when we wake up after we have used the bathroom. We also must keep in mind that different scales are calibrated differently thus giving us a different reading. Don't pay so much attention to the number. Pay attention to the gain and loss and try to stick with one scale. No matter what actual weight any scale may say, if you lose 5 pounds, you lose 5 pounds, just as 5 pounds of feathers weighs the same as 5 pounds of bricks.

I came to the conclusion that my weight had increased so rapidly due to two factors. One was that I had not used the bathroom yet as I always do when I wake up in the morning. The other factor was that the day before, I had consumed far less water and far more sodium than I usually do, thus I was suffering from water retention. This is another reason why we should not rely solely on the scale as a measure of our progress, because often times the change that we see is a water weight loss or gain, not fat. I like to measure my progress by keeping track of my inches, gauging how my clothes feel, and measuring my body fat percentage. This helps me because I carry weight much differently than most. When asked to guess my weight, many guess an average of 140. When I reveal to people that I am hovering around 180 they usually don't believe me. When I was hovering around 140 I began to look too skinny and I had lost all of my womanly curves, thus I have come to the conclusion that 150 is the ideal weight for me. I believe that I tend to weigh more because of the fact that muscle weighs more than fat. I have a lot of muscle, primarily in my legs.

I have made the conscious decision to enjoy and love my body as it is in the present. I will continue to work out, eat right, and strive to increase my quality of health and level of fitness, but I will not wait until I reach a certain goal to do everything that I want to do. I hear people saying that they want to wait until they shed the pounds to take pictures, put on a swim suit or perform in a show....I used to be the same way. While using things such as this for motivation to become healthier is great, I no longer believe in putting my life on hold. Take it from me, I speak from experience.

When I was 150, I felt fat. When I was 140, I felt too skinny, missing my womanly curves and feeling like I was shaped like a little boy. Now I look back at pictures and see how beautiful I was at every moment of my life, even when I was 214....the key is believing it. When you believe that you are beautiful you exude a confidence that is magnetic.

With all of that said, I will not wait to do a professional photo shoot, I will not wait to wear a two piece swim suit, and I will not wait to do everything I aspire to do. I will not wait for the weight!

My Take: Live your life the way you want to NOW and not when the weight comes off- you're focusing on the future but what about the present?? Admittedly I still have my moments where I allow the thought of my weight to dictate my actions , but I remind myself that life is best enjoyed lived instead of standing on the sidelines.

From a fashion standpoint there are LOADS of clothing lines and stores with us full-figured women in mind- so why wait to lose the weight?? Look & feel your absolute best now :)

Dress Me! Work it Out.....

Good Morning!

Happy New Year to everyone!

I know I'm a bit late on my greeting but I started going back to the abyss I call Bar Review and trying to get back into the swing of things. So far it's hard to get back the momentum I had in the summer but all I can do is my very best.

We're still pretty much in the beginnging of the New Year and many of you are still in the "gung ho" mode of your New Year's Resolutions.... I've been reading a good amount of emails that alot of you are trying to lose weight- and in that same vein have started to head to the gym.

Lafei writes, "I'm determined to lose weight for 2009, which means I've got to get into the gym but I have two problems 1. Everyone in there is skinny and their workout wear is coordinated, what do you wear? and 2.I can't find a sports bra to fit my G cups, any advice?"

Lafei, 1st off congratulations on your goal! Don't let the skinny people and what they wear deter you from your getting your workout on- everyone in the gym is in there to improve somehow so don't stress too much on how others view you - DO YOU! As for your attire, do what's comfortable for you- that's the only way you'll be able to focus on your workout.

For the gym I keep it simple usually wearing capri leggings or yoga pants and a t-shirt... I used to wear baggy sweats and shirts, but threw them out because I refuse to cover up unnecessarily. I've started to wear a lil' bit of eye shadow and foundation because it makes me feel good & there are some really cute fellas at my gym. :)
Here are some affordable picks....

Just my Size: Jersey Crew Neck $6.99 & V-Neck $6.99
Old Navy: Jersey Yoga Pant $19.50, Yoga Capri $4.99 ; Piping Accent Activewear Pant $24.50, Lane Bryant

Active Hooded Jacket, $29.99 Danskin, Piped Active Jacket $16.50, Old Navy

Don't forget the sneakers! Cross-trainers are good for support,New Balances are a good look:

Other places to check out:
Junonia (has a great selection and is worth a look but is more on the more expensive side)
Always For Me
Alight
Danskin

As for bras.... you've asked the right "boobified" sister. There's something to be said for a good sports bra. It literally used to hurt when I ran on the treadmill- I can't stress SUPPORT enough and finding a sports bra that "contained me" was a challenge...

My picks...

(from l to r): Enell $64-$66 - (my sports bra of choice- I can jump and my girls don't follow), Champion Full-Figure Underwire, $42 (DD), Shock Absorber, $50 (this bra didn't support me much but I've heard gret reviews from others), Fiona $44, Moving Comfort

Pricey yes.. but well worth the cost, the "girls" will thank you! trust!

Lastly, don't be alarmed if your weight loss is slow. Numbers are one thing, but take heed to how your clothes fit - that's a better measure of progress. If the gym isn't your speed, try a dance class, walk with friends, swim (if you don't have hair issues!), most of all don't wait until you reach your goal to live life.... Work it Out!!
