Dress Me: Get a Leg Up!

Good Morning!

Snow flurries in October?? Who else is giving a sideeye to the weather?

Today's question comes from Emily- she writes "I see girls in cute tights all the time, and I wanted to know if there are any 'non-plain' options for us big girls? My thighs are big and usually I'm squeezing into tights fearful that I'll rip them. I'm tired of wearing just black or brown, what are your suggestions?"

YES Emily... there are tight options for those of us who are thick in the thighs! Cute and colorful tights are a definite trend for this fall - lucky for us there are now options for us to rock the colorful, patterned trends as before we didn't have a choice.

Lace Patterned Tights, $12.99, One Stop Plus

What's fun about tights is the "POP" factor, a normally blase dress has the ability to be transformed by a brightly colored or patterned pair of tights. (and we thought tights were just about functionality? nope!)

If patterns scare you try them in subtle soft colors first... also try to make the tights the background of your outfit instead of the main event wear them under skirts and boots. Also, layer them up - a bright color under fishnets is a good 2 for 1 event. Also, keep your clothes simple... an outfit that is loaded with patterns might clash with bright, patterned tight.

One trick I've learned is that the sizing is super tricky- those height and weight charts tend NOT to account that most of us are endowed in the bottom end - my suggestion: try the size up if you can to account for more space

Take a look at some options and show some leg!

Fan Fancy!!

Good Morning!!

It's hot here in NYC (finally, ok well maybe not totally) so I can now finally talk about one of my favorite accessories... the Hand Fan.

Yes, a fan! And not the church fan , those elegant fans that you often see "ladies" whip out to cool themselves on hot and hazy days. Me, I usually just take a flyer and try to decrease the heat by a temp or two but lately I've been drawn to elegantly made fans... I found a really beautiful leather and pearl handle fan at a thrift shop for $15!!!

I've seen a beautiful assorment over on Etsy...

Handpainted Silk Fan, Gilbea $45, Tulips Fuchias, PalomaSiaDesigns $23, WigglesFans4Fun,$30

Or look to wedding sites for an as
sortment of simple & affordable fans....

Also check out The Knot!!

The more unique, the more of a statement.... from bright colors, to interesting cuts to unique handles. It's an accessory that's often overlooked but if you add just one to your style arsenal, I'm sure it'll make you stand out. ;)

Think you might get one?

I got love for gloves!!!

Good Morning!

"The best way to deal with the cold is INSIDE" -

It's cold here in NYC- especially on Saturday!! I attended the play "American Buffalo" on this weekend and though I had on one of my warmest coats I still felt like an ice cube! As my hands froze -I realized that it's definitely time to pull out the gloves.

I never liked gloves..... I always felt like they got in way of whatever I was trying to do.... making my already stubby fingers feel even more so. When I was young I was "famous" for pulling my gloves off as soon as I left my mother's watchful eye - However, I am a firm believer in doing whatever I have to do in order to remain warm so I've been on the hunt!

Button detail long knit gloves $14.50, Lane Bryant

Browsing around I got myself into a bit of trouble- seems like I can't be happy with just one pair. Noooo, I started looking for gloves that served the purpose of not only keeping my hands warm but amused me with different colors and prints- I got lost in trying to match the gloves with my numerous scarves or whatever pair tickled my fancy. Each pair seemed to transform my mood somehow; for example....

These remind me of the movies in which the heroine slapped her male counterpart with her glove , flipped her cape over her shoulder and stormed out the room. (Slap! Slap!)

Caroline Amato driving gloves $149-Eluxury.com ; Portolano Patent Driving Gloves $145, Bloomingdales

I think my functional, every-day pick will be the convertible glove- it goes from mitten to fingerless glove! Perfect for my "I don't feel like I can grab anything!" sentiment.

Convertible Mittens $9.50, Old Navy

Speaking of fingerless gloves - Michelle from Newark says "I love fingerless gloves- but can't find any pairs other than black- do you know of any?"
What do you think of these Michelle?

Military fingerless gloves $20- Urban Outfitters; Long Fingerless Cashmere Gloves $48- Nordstrom's , Lindsey Leopard Entarge Fingerless Gloves $34 - Betsey Johnson

Here are some others that caught my attention - it's the details that catch my eye.

Ralph Lauren Lambswool Equestrian Glove $30Macy's; Alfani Diamond Quilted Leather Glove $68.35 Macy's ; With a flourish gloves $38, Anthropologie

And yes, you can always go with the all black pair that we all have - but if you're looking for a tiny change to your wardrobe- the gloves have it! :)

Protect ya Neck......

Hump Day.... who else is already looking forward to the weekend?

As we venture into
“The Big Chill” the stylish (and cold) gal has to run down the checklist :
  • Warm coat
  • Cute boots
  • and a bold scarf !
A scarf is not just a fall/winter necessity- it's an all-season accessory; a belt, headband, any thing you can wrap it up to be. It not only serves as a means to protect your neck from the cold, but it can turn a drab outfit into something fierce. It's one of those accessories that it done right than can turn the jeans and tee-shirt combo into something totally "funkdafied".

I've always stayed FAR away from the norm, preferring big bold colors and patterns to punch up my usually dark coats (it also brightens up my face). I believe that my choice in scarves during my pre-stylish days was the fashionista making a preview in my life- peeking through the drab colors and shapeless clothing I used to wear. Scarves are one my essentials- if you know me, then you know I love them and have alot of 'em! My collection is unintentionally large ... I've picked up some funky scarves at flea markets, was handed down some demure yet classic ones when my oh-so-stylish great aunt passed away , received my beautiful multi-tonal purple, blue and fuchsia scarf from my friend when he went to India, and a vast array of silk scarves from a family member's trip to Asia.

As for price, it all depends on the fabric- you can spend anywhere from $5 to $30 from a street vendor (the Village on the weekend has a huge array from local designers) or purchase a luxe cashmere scarf for around $60. As with most accessories, variety is key- change up your scarf like you would a handbag or shoes- it can be a mere accent or a declaration -Have Fun!

LMC tip: Make sure to care for your scarf otherwise it can break out your face (oil from your neck/hair makes it to your face) No bueno...

Some interesting picks:

Anthropoligie has a HUGE selection of scarves.... (from l to r) Circle of Light $88, Snow Clouds $78, Tousled $98

Jazzy Rabbit Neck Scarf $26.95 (I don't know about this one.. what do you think?)

The trend this season.... Snowball Hoodie Scarf $38

Artwork for the neck... Ed Hardy Koi Fish Scarf $58, Custo Barcelona City Violet $84
