Guess It's Time to Bundle Up

Morning!

This unexpected nor'easter has propelled my search for the right winter coat and even boots since I'm looking at 6 inches of snow outside my window. The fact that I'm shoveling snow before I'm raking leaves boggles my mind.

Coat-shopping can sometimes be overwhelming - you want to be warm, but cute. If you're like me you're not into the bulk of a winter coat and want the coat to flatter the rest of your stylish wardrobe. Here are some of my tips for choosing the right coat:

What it's made of
If you're not into the bulk that winter coats create then look for a coat that's not bulky but lies flat like leather or tweed. If you're in a BRRR climate and need the down factor (me!) then look for any quilted pattern, those take the eye away from the bulk - and adding a belt only helps to accentuate your shape.

Diamond Down Parka $115, Land's End

Length
This is a definite preference issue - some like it short. Do whatever is comfortable for you but will also keep you warm. I have a short coat (cheaper) for those short, across the way trips - mid-thigh coat for my more active days and a long mid-calf coat when it's so cold that it doesn't even make sense. (I also live on a hill so the wind is a factor too, whipping snow does not feel good)

Albany Coat $169; As You Are

Style/Shape
What kind of dress flatters you best? Think of your coat like a dress and look for a coat with the same shape. A-line hands down  is best for most but the fun will lie in trying on different style and seeing what suits you best.

Long Wool Patter Coat $159; Avenue

Detailing
Who doesn't love a little shine, a ruffle or some fur? I find details to add a hint of fun to anything and if you're coat is to ward off the cold- cool buttons, fur or even a bright color can help the winter (and now fall) snow blues.

My Personal Fave (yes because it's purple) Ruffled Short Coat $169; Lane Bryant

When shopping for coats, what are the things you look ?

Wedding planning has driven me crazy... more later.
