Closet Essentials: The Pencil Skirt

Morning!!!

side note: I'm over winter and am desperately seeking sunshine and warmth in my life, how about you?

Pencil skirts are classic and are an extremely important closet essential; they are sophisticated yet extremely chic. A black or dark color pencil skirt is a definite go-to for a corporate or formal look; but it's perfectly ok to also treat yourself  to a bright color or bold patterned pencil skirt.Versatility is key with a pencil skirt; wear heels for work or a night out but you can also pair it with flats for a simple casual look.

The Pencil Skirt is a piece that admittedly I was not a fan of before - I wasn't comfortable with  the lean lines that a pencil skirt creates, fearing that it highlighted my "bumps" - this attitude has changed (thank you CONFIDENCE) and now I'm no longer fearful of the lines that the pencil skirt creates, for me it creates and highlights my curves.

Here are some of my top picks:

Starlet Twill Pencil Skirt $40; Kiyonna

Bardot Pencil Skirt $78, Igigi
The "one" I've been looking for... and will buy ASAP!
Leopard Belted Pencil Skirt $29.99, Baby Phat

Lace Overlay Pencil Skirt $16.99; Avenue

Red Satin Pencil Skirt $44; Torrid
Tips to wearing a  Pencil Skirt:

1. Purchase a pencil skirt that has some type of stretch to it - you don't want to be uncomfortable when trying to sit down. Tight pencil skirt No, fitting yes. The skirt should highlight your shape, not fight with it.
2.Play up your top - if your skirt is a solid formal color find a bright, patterned or embellished top (try ruffles). If your skirt is patterned look for a solid top.
3. If your mid-section is an issue, great shapewear is key.
4. You want to be able to walk, so make sure to find a skirt that has a back slit. (I speak from experience)
5. High pumps look amazing with pencil skirts, try it!

Do you embrace or shun pencil skirts? Do you have any tips to add?

I adore pencil skirts. The only ones that ever have fit me correctly are the ones from Jibri, but I can't justify the cost at this time in my life.

Great post.

a high waisted one is also good if you have a thick middle such as myself. I made my own though out of stretch twill.. I plan to make another one out of stretch denim.

I think you've covered everything! I think lots of plus/curvy women are afraid oh pencil skirts. I wish they knew that they could wear them with ease with these great tips!

@carla yes, the high waisted ones are great for the tummy. Did you follow a skirt pattern? do tell, I'd like to try!

The pencil skirt is sexy without being overt. One other tip: A knee-length cut will flatter everyone.

Very cute ... It just kills me that plus size clothing has to be so expensive...
