Ask LMC: I can't wear what they wear

Hey Folks!

Today's question is a very interesting one. I'm usually pretty good at responding, but for this question I really needed to think a bit because it's a question that's been asked many times and there really is no clear answer.

S. from Mobile, Alabama asks "I love to read all the different plus size fashion blogs that are out right now. But there's something that bothers me -some can shop in straight size stores. I'm short, a size 26 and I can't adapt to the idea of making things that normally don't fit me, fit. I can't do that for two reasons- I refuse to pay money for clothes that don't fit me, and aren't made for me and two when I've tried to make it fit - it just doesn't work. I don't like when clothes look extremely tight or short on me, that doesn't work for me. I can't wear what they wear or maybe I just refuse to- what do you think?"

Hey S, this is a really good question - and depending on who you ask I'm sure you'd receive a different answer. There's no such word as "can't" so I think this all boils down to what YOU personally like for yourself. Everyone defines their own style and what works for them - so where one may like tight and short clothes, another may opt for pieces that "flow". I know of many ladies who are probably nodding their heads in agreement to your statement . I myself am not keen on shopping in straight size stores if I know that it will be a struggle to get pieces to fit, however I have become more willing to get creative and play with certain pieces by wearing them in different ways. I feel your frustration, as sometimes it's hard to visualize yourself in clothes in which the tag isn't in your size range or when you don't see it on a different body frame (in your case - short, over a size 20)
.

Like you, I'm not too keen on spending my money on clothes that I have to squeeze into - there are bills that need to be paid and other things that can be bought with that money- however that's just me. It takes time to know and work within your own fashion "comfort" zone - not everyone follows the "trends" if you don't want to buy clothes from straight sized stores then don't, it's ok!

Dressing for your body shape instead of focusing on your clothing size is VITAL ... what may fit you well may not fit another size 26 the same way. So my answer to your question is "DO YOU"... if you feel that you don't want to wear what others wear then don't worry about it, wear what works for you and makes you feel untouchable!

Do any of you feel the way S feels? Does the trend of wearing clothes that are not in your size range bother you? There's been alot of debate about this issue, so please speak your piece on this one...

I sounds like there is a self confident issue here, Because S said that she is basically comparing her body to other plus size lady's in the fashion blogs, she feels like she can't wear what they wear because of her own frame and height. I recently dealt with something similar, I have a banana aka rectangle aka straight shape at 5 ft even and a size 2x on top and 22/24 on bottom. I too felt a bit intimidated by some curvy models. Nevertheless, my goal is to own my body, sure I may not have an apple bottom, but this is ME. I am a banana.. LOL Secondly, I think that S should try on different things, don't assume that something will be ill fitting without giving it a try. I think She will be surprised by various fabrics and cuts. I know how she feels because I am also short. I went to Jo ann fabrics and got some of those iron on strips to hem up some of my pants, others I can manage with depending on the shoe. But again, I am not a "fashionista" I am a full figure, mom that looks for comfort in everything I wear, that goes from dress clothes to the sweats I through on in the morning to do drop offs. I hope this helps. S it's really all about your comfort, you don't have to look like the latest trends or the curvy model, it's your choice, dress according to what feels good and comfortable to you. There are cute comfy clothes out there, you just have to try. I know this can be a barrier to you, but it's worth a shop. If I don't LOVE a piece I don't buy it ! Can't afford that in todays economy. This means, I must feel good in everything I buy. I really hope this helps

Me what I would love to find are rings that actually fit my fingers!! The only ones I can buy are the expensive ones but even then, I have to pay extra to have them made bigger. But what about all the cheap, cool ones? The inexpensive ones that most people can find at all kinds of different stores. The big fun ones with big fake stones or flowers or whatever!! And don't get me started on bracelet!! It sucks!!

I have to say that I agree with S. on this subject. I am also a size 26 and have a hard time "making things work" if they are not made for plus sizes. The only success I have had in trying is a few very stretchy XXL skirts from Old Navy. I think it's great when other people can do it, and I am a little envious of the fact that they have more options than I do, but I am not going to shell out my hard earned cash for something that wasn't designed with my body in mind.

I am a size 20, sometimes even a 22...I can't make everything "work" for me. So I feel your writers concerns. Most people that can make it work are on the smaller side of plus, but Tiffany from Fatshopaholic.com has even made pieces from F21 and H&M work for her. I guess it really all depends on what you like and what you feel comfortable in...cause in the end, that's really all that matters.

I'd rather plus size stores catch up on the trends and make some of these pieces for us so that they can flow on us just as well as slender girls...I won't squeeze into anything, cause i'm not a fan of showing off my rolls...haha :) but seriously, it's all a matter of preference. I just recently started my attempt in "making it work"...it's been interesting thus far.

As a size 16/18 curvy, girl. I rarely shop in plus size stores. Even when I was at my biggest a size 22, I only shopped at LB for pants. One of the most important things to know as a plus size girl is to know your shape. Not your size, not your weight. Your shape. Once you understand the shape of your body, you can start to immediately look at things on the hanger and say, this will/will not fit. I have clothes in my closet ranging from size 10's -20's. You have to take the silhouette of clothing into consideration. Cut is key. Also, when shopping don't be afraid to try on something that's not in your size. Since you are a 26, I would try things that have more forgiving cuts in smaller sizes. For ex. if you are a pear shape, you can get awaay with smaller tops. So, instead of that 26, you may can even get away with a size 16. Seriously! Cuts are important and sometimes you just have to go in a straight size store early in the morning when they first open and try on things. Curvy girls have to try on and get in tune with the shape of your body.

These are great suggestions! Another question that I get alot is this - how can you order smaller sizes when ordering online, how do you know how things will fit?
