It's Monday and since Monday's are the "drag" day for many I figured I'd bring some laughter into your life if only for a moment. This weekend as I packed my closet (painful process), my favorite movie "Coming to America" came on!! This movie got me through some boring boarding school weekends and helped me get an A when it was time for freshman drama "recreation skits". The thought of doing this post cracks me up, but hey we all need to laugh sometimes, enjoy!!!
Today's installment of Throwback Theatre is a Classic... Jheri Curls!!!

Named for Jheri Redding, a hair stylist from Chicago the Jheri Curl cam on the scene in the 70's and didn't make an exit until the early 90's, making a wet, slick impact on hair culture all over. The glossy (oily!), long curl look was very popular with athletes and celebrities for it's "wash n' wear" factor (why they didn't just keep a fade, I don't know!).
Like a perm the jheri curl was a process, the softener to loosen the hair, and the curling rods and solution to permanently curl the hair. It was an expensive style that often left hair dry and brittle from the harsh chemicals- the transition process often took longer than usual because of so much hair breakage eventually leading to it's decreased popularity.
Whether we wore one or not, perhaps what we all remember and laugh about the most is the Yellow & Red Activator bottle !! My cousin was terrible at remembering to wear a jheri curl cap at night and would douse her poor jheri-curled head with activator in the morning (stores even carried the travel size version, yes it was THAT serious).
Notorious for the "slickback " it usually left on clothes, walls, and furniture the jheri curl eventually went to the "style tomb" (hopefully to never make a resurgence again!).

I'll lose my job if I keep reading and laughing like I am - I had a jheri curl and I colored it!!Talk about damaged hair, it was a mess trying to get my hair back together after that. My boyfriend at the time hated the stains it left on his shirts and used to jokingly put a rag on his shoulder when he hugged me..funny post.
Girl I caught Coming to America Saturday night too! I could not stop laughing! We were tryna get dressed to go out, wound up turning the tv off just to get some jeans on! Too funny!
