Spotlight: Teslyn Butler, winner of FFFWeek Cover Model Search

Good Morning!

So you know that I've been covering FFFWeek from every aspect possible because I want to make sure that all of you are aware of how much of a message that this event will send to the industry. Today I wanted to shine the spotlight on Ms. Teslyn Butler, who is the beautiful, vivacious winner of the Full Figured Fashion Week Cover Model Search.

In all the busyness leading up to FFFWeek, Teslyn was so cool to answer my questions - it's much appreciated, I hope you all enjoy!

How did you get your start modeling, was that always the plan?

No, I wouldn't say that modeling has always been in my plan but I did start wanting to become a model at age 16. I heard on the radio that there were scouts coming from New York that were looking for plus size models in the Arkansas area. I was scouted by Andy Paige herself and she wanted me to go to a showcase. At the showcase, I received a call back from Essence Magazine. Nothing really happened with that, but that experience is what motivated me to pursue a career in modeling.

What’s the biggest hurdle in regards to being a plus size model?

Well there are limited opportunities, for women that are truly plus size. The major agencies are seeking women, sizes 8 to 12 and I, honestly, don't consider a size 8 or 10 to be plus size. I think there should be more opportunities for women that are size 14 and above.

What projects are you working on currently?

I am currently a print model for Whisper's Cafe and Chocolate Sushi Couture. I'm a signature model for Konfident Diva and X' Change Modeling. I am also in the process of becoming a spokesmodel for a new designer watch brand that is set to launch in 2010.

What’s the most common fashion dilemma you see?

Oh my gosh, I love this question. Bras! It is so important to have on a bra that properly supports you, it can make you look 10 pounds lighter. Better yet, having on any good foundation garment is key! I am bottom heavy so it’s very important for me to wear the right foundation. I can't get away with just a thong. If a woman has on great-fitting foundation garments, she'll look so much better in her clothes. Another dilemma that I see with full-figured women is that they either wear something that is too tight or too loose. Please ladies, wear clothes that fit.

Do you have any advice for aspiring plus size models?

First, before I answer this question, I would like to say that I still consider myself to be a beginner in the industry. I still have a lot to learn, however I do know a little.

I would tell any aspiring plus model to research, research, and research. Study modeling like you're majoring it. Research plus size models, designers, and companies that have plus models working for them. Know the requirements for being a plus size model and make sure you learn about the different types of modeling that you can do such as commercial, editorial, and runway. Then research how you fit into those categories.. I would also suggest that any aspiring plus model us websites such as venusdivas.com, plusmodelmag, and plusmodels.com as a resource.

What made you decide to enter to be the Cover Model for FFFWeek?

I decided to enter the contest because I wanted to be a part of history. The funny part is I hate competitions, but I felt that it was my duty to enter into this contest. This event is huge and I wanted to be a part of it.

What's your take on the plus size fashion industry?

I believe the plus size fashion industry currently has made tremendous strides but there is still work that needs to be done. I think that the plus size fashion industry has been limited. We are stylish just like anyone else, but after Full-Figured Fashion Week this will definitely change.

What are your thoughts on Full Figured Fashion Week?

I am so thrilled about Full-Figured Fashion Week. This is a celebration like Gwen Devoe says. For the first time in history, we are going to get to see a showcase of amazing designers. I am so happy for all the designers that are in the show. Full-Figured Fashion Week is going to open up the doors for many people, I believe it's going to have a global impact. As for the stores that still carry matronly garments, maybe this will motivate them to examine what they are offering to public. This will be a wake up call for society. This event is long overdue. Who better to make history than Devoe Signature Events.

What's one styling secret that you would be willing to share.

Wear clothes that you love. If you feel pretty, elegant, sexy or classy in a particular garment, that's the way people will see you. Spend a little more money if you have to, but find clothes and designers that work for you.

What are the 3 fashion essentials every woman must have?

Three fashion essentials that every woman must have is a nice pair of trouser style
jeans, a nice blazer that gives you that curvy shape, and a nice pair of high heels.

Thanks Teslyn, can't wait to see you next week!
