International Chic: Carmakoma

Good Morning!!!

Today I'm debuting a new installment called "International Chic"! Nowadays most of us spend lots of time online- and considering where you live you may even depend on the internet to shop. The most exciting thing about internet shopping for me is actually finding new lines and site boutiques to shop from. Alot of us overlook the overseas market but big things are happening across the water...
of course I'm here to search high & low to bring you a whole range of options, I know your wallet might hate me but your style adores me :)

First up, Carmakoma representing Denmark!

Launched in the summer of 2008, Carmakoma is an exclusive online store with the cool & trendy fashionista in mind. When I first came across Carmakoma, I immediately thought to myself "edgy". In the past I've been apprehensive about "edgy", because I'm not one who really wanted to stand out, but as I've grown style-wise I like to incorporate the "edgy" into my wardrobe because it always keeps folks guessing. I have a friend who's into the goth loook who relies on Carmakoma to keep her "trendy & dark". Whatever your style, I encourage to look and see for yourself what's going on over there...

I got a chance to chat with Heidie Lykke one half of the amazing duo behind the line; enjoy!

How did you primarily get into fashion?
I have always been creative and I have been sketching & sewing since I was a child. I have always loved fashion so it was very obvious to me that I had to become a designer. I worked as a design assistant for a very famous Danish label & designer, & after 3 years I became a design manager for another Danish brand- this was fantastic & I have learned so much, I really love to develop & create. Through my jobs I have met so many wonderful curvy women who were sad because they did not fit my designs & I really felt ignored by the fashion business- that's reason why Angelica (the other 1/2 of Carmakoma's design team). We wanted to do a different line for all the beautiful women out there who want cool & trendy designer clothes.

How would describe the plus size fashion scene in Denmark?
BORING!!!!

What inspires your creations?
I am of course inspired by many things- but what inspires me the most is traveling & music. When starting a new collection I always create a story with my 2 girls "Carma" & "Koma"... Carma is the feminine girl & Koma is the rock chick girl with lots of attitude. (Carmakoma...ahhh I got it!)

What are the 3 fashion essentials every woman must have?
It's very difficult to say what is essential for every woman because fashion is so individual. But for me, I think it's very important to have 1) basic black tank top 2)some cool boots or ballerinas depending on the season & 3) a favorite pair of jeans. With these 3 items you can build up every kind of look for the everyday and party :)

...and what about for a summer party - what should we not be without?
A pair of cool & sophisticated sunglasses to wear when going to the party, a sexy party dress for instance Carmakoma's Spleen , lovely heels, a clutch for your lipgloss & phone and a United cardigan to keep you warm when leaving the party! (both looks are below)

What is the biggest mistake that plus size woman makes when getting dressed?
The biggest mistake I've encountered while working with Carmakoma is to hear a beautiful, curvy woman say "I can't wear this", a curvy woman should be more open towards fashion because they really can wear much more than they think! So my suggestion is to always be open towards new things, looks & styles - the secret is styling!

What's your take on the plus size fashion industry & what mark do you intend to make on it?
I think that the plus size industry should do better to offer the curvy woman trendy designer clothing with lots of cool details - & that's what Carmakoma intends to do.

Tell me about your line, what's the vision?
We want to the curvy fashion minded woman clothing with a perfect fit & quality, we want to offer styles which can be mixed into different looks.

What's one styling secret you would be willing to share?
The best styling secret is to bring out what you like best about your body. Always try to wear clothes which makes you feel good & sexy- that is why curvy women should look at Carmakoma's collection. But a nice styling look is to have a nice shirt dress - it has so many looks; on top of a pair of tight jeans or leggings & a blazer on top & a big scarf is a cool look for this season.

Any fashion "no-no's"?

As long as a person feels good about it then I don't want to say "no"... I love that fashion is so individual!!!

What word of advice would you give to the everyday full-figured woman who is reluctant to step out?
Love yourself as you are!!!

Anything else you would like to share?
I'd like thank you for you interest in Carmakoma, and thanks to all the women around the world who write us everyday to thank us for Carmakoma. I just want to say that we will keep doing our best effort to every curvy woman the best collections.

Thanks to Heidie & her team at Carmakoma for the opportunity, make sure to check out their site!

**LMC: As always European sizing is different so make sure to look at the charts. Although Carmakoma goes up to a size 20, there will be plenty more lines featured that have larger sizes.**

Where did you find this line?? That jacket at the end is dangerous (in a good way). Who would have thought this kind of edge in Denmark? Nice.

Good post. There are so many fashion lines that cater to plus sizes overseas. It's a good way to find an individual style as a plus size fashion maven.
